I just bought myself an L7S7A2 board and it runs fine with an XP2400+ and PC2700 RAM. I found an application which can read out the clock frequency for RAM access and it claims that I'm only running 266 MHz. In the BIOS I leave the CPU frequency at 133 MHz. and let the system choose the best frequency for the RAM. It automatically fills in 166 MHz. But it seems the RAM is still running 266 MHz. Isn't it possible to run the RAM faster without increasing the CPU frequency? Cheers, Kjeld (Denmark)

Your XP runs at 266 so your mainboard matches the ram to the cpu at 266. There is a possibility that if your run the ram faster than the cpu that some errors will occur. It is always best to run the ram at the same speed as the cpu. Later MD ECS K7S5A REV 1.0, Honey-X Bios OC021209b. Yes, but that will not necessarily give you higher performance compared to a setup where you run the CPU bus and memory bus the the same frequency. The SiS735/745/746 performs best overall when running in a synchronous CPU (FSB)/MEM mode. I know it may sound a little weird, but in this case, you will get the best performance (but the difference is very small) by underclocking your memory to match the FSB. If you want to take full advantage of the memory (and CPU), you can lower the CPU multiplier to for example 12x and run the FSB and memory at 166MHz, thus ending up with the same core speed but a faster FSB and memory bus. Both the board and CPU should be able to take it just fine. You can also just try to overclock the CPU using the default multiplier of 15x by just changing the FSB to 166, but that would give you a 500MHz core overclock, not all chips will do that. Make sure you have good cooling.

I tried setting the "CPU Frequency" to 166 MHz in the bios and the "CPU/DRAM Clock Ratio" to 1:1. Then I changed the FIDJP1 jumpers to open-short-open-short-short as described in the BIOS manual. The system wouldn't POST. Then (after resetting the BIOS) I tried setting the "CPU Frequency" to 133 MHz and the "CPU/DRAM Clock Ratio" to 1:1. FIDJP1 jumpers to open-short-open-short-short. The system still wouldn't POST. As soon as I put a jumper in position 1-2 it works. I can see with wcpuid that the multiplier is 15.0. Any idea what's wrong? Cheers, Kjeld
