Will I have to re-install the Operating System (Win XP PRO), or can I just re-install the drivers for the motherboard? If so, how? e.g. Boot in Safe Mode, uninstall drivers (which), then let it autodetect the new hardware...?
Cheers

New Mobo - New OS? |
Lead | |
|
Having finally given up on trying to fix my k7s5a, I'll be getting a new motherboard tomorrow(ish): Abit NF7 rev2.0, on recommendation from this forum.
Will I have to re-install the Operating System (Win XP PRO), or can I just re-install the drivers for the motherboard? If so, how? e.g. Boot in Safe Mode, uninstall drivers (which), then let it autodetect the new hardware...? Cheers |

New Mobo | ||

Hi IV
Without a shadow of doubt the best way is always going to be a clean install. I know it's more work/time etc - but further down the line it's going to mean less annoying little error messages stemming from "old" settings and bits of drivers still laying around in the system. Been following the story of your K7S5A over the past days- shame it's died on you. Mine is still going strong tho now mounted in a different case for my wife to use. It runs a couple of degrees warmer in her case ( abt 47C CPU) but as she doesn't do anything much except design cards and stuff like that-- the extra bit of heat isn't a problem. Here - changed( after some hassles with an ASUS A7N8X) to an MSI KT6V/xp3000 which ATM, is running nicely. Good luck Dave |

Hi Dave,
What sort of did you have with the A7N8X? They have a good reputation - I nearly bought one. Do you (or anyone else) know if it is possible to use the 'Repair' option when installing XP to migrate to a different motherboard? Edit: I just found a really useful guide on this subject: www.windowsreinstall.com/...therboard/ However, all the procedures seem to require 'pre-actions' with the old motherboard still in place (and working |

A7N8X problems | ||
|
Hi IV
Well- more troubles that I thought possible-- briefly---- Bought the Board( A7N8X-E Deluxe) from a local firm at Portsmouth(UK) as a bundle including xp3000, fan/cooler and 512MB DDRAM- came preassembled( IE: CPU and fan mounted). Put it all in the case along with my original HDDs/CDROM/CDR/FDD- It took two attempts to start up - but otherwise apparently OK.Setup BIOS and so on. Loaded Windows etc etc- all OK. Next morning - wouldn't start. Press the button - fans run for a few seconds then silence.Eventually got going after several attempts. This got worse by the day - by the 5th day it was taking up to 30 mins to start- then only after CMOS reset. Phoned vendor - they said " We've had one or two of these with that problem - think it may be related to the Fan speed sensor in BIOS- we'll send you a new fan." Fan arrived next AM - fitted - no difference. Phoned again - they said " bring it back we'll swap board" Did so- next day. Got home with new board- thought "I'll do a table top job first before putting all in case"- just as well - the new one wouldn't even start at all. Phoned them again - not very happy (me - that is). They said " No problem- you can have refund and , if you wish get a different board!" Hence the MSI KT6V-LSR- which so far performs well. Very frustrating few days but I must say the suppliers were very very good - no problems with the exchanges- (FYI it was Novatech ) Since then I have found that cold start problems have been a known issue with the A7N8X on occasions. Good luck with the new setup Dave |

I've replaced the mobo on a NT based OS a few times, many times without much warning. I've found that usually an in-place upgrade usually works well. You have to reinstall windows updates services packs and things, but you keep all your installed software.
support.microsoft.com/def...bid=315341 ^^ That is the microsoft kb article on it. |

Igloo Vindaloo,
I've never heard of anybody successfully transferring a HD that had WinXP loaded on one system (your K7S5A) to a different mobo (your new Abit NF7) When you make more than 3 changes to the 'hardware' in a system, WinXP will insist that you phone up one of 'Billy's minions' to get a new 'authorization code' If you manage to bring this off and it works, then please give us all the details that you can remember. I've done that task (transfering a loaded windows between motherboards) a number of times, but only with the corporate version of windows that does not require product activation. I thought you just had to 'reactivate' the product if you transfered it to a machine with too many changes? At least, that's what I remember from the Windows XP launch....

Aaaaha! Another guy using the FCKGW version (me too!)
And yes you do have to 'reactivate' the product if you transfered it to a machine with too many changes, but that's where the 'call to one of Billy's minions' comes in. You have to expain exactly WHY you need a new 36 digit (or whatever... I know it was A LOT of numbers) 'Activation code' I'm selling off my fancy cars. Bill's minions | ||

If you read my post further up you'll realise that I used/installed /tried to install my copy of XP home on 4 mobos in the space of a few days.
On the original setup K7S5A - I had activated about 5 months ago. The move to the first A7N8X was painless -online activation no problem( Hardware changes were - mobo,CPU,HDD) The next A7N8X never got enough life in it to get any where near activating anything at all- much less Windows. Last came the KT6V- flawless installation - all running fine - OK lets activate- "Sorry you have activated this product before- Please phone Bill" As it was - no problem - phoned - explained about happy days spent trying to get things working - Activation - hooray!. But - it it really right that we should have to explain ourselves to someone 500 miles away- who may choose not to believe you?( In the UK I think MS call centre is in Ireland somewhere). Furthermore - how did they know I was telling the truth?( I was) Dave |

yea, i love the re-activatoin game... when i first decided to crawl out from under my old duron 700, I had windows XP, and Office XP installed... suffice to say in 6 months i went thru about 5 motherboards... (i have a habit of buying one, then selling it to a friend to get a better one) so, I got to make 2 calls per upgrade, not to mention, when i changed the hdd and cpu and nic all at once, i got to make 2 more calls that time, and when you get another new cpu, and decide to go wireless, you get to make yet another set of calls.... I bet microsoft has my phone tapped, and a survielence chip up my butt already lol..... I did find a place that tells you what hardware changes will likely result in re-activation tho, here ya go... www.aumha.org/win5/a/wpa.php

Re: New Mobo - New OS? | ||

Well, all seems to be going well with the new mobo - even the dual channel DDR with my mismatched pair of sticks.
And the installation of XP over the top of the previous copy seems to be working too. Although I had to re-install a lot of drivers and some software. And my version of XP didn't have to phone home when I made these 'minor' hardware changes. |
