Skip the next paragraph if you dont have time. It is only prose describing my shaky start into the strange but wonderful and exciting world of over clocking, and I am certainly no writer.
All excited about my first OC attempts, I patiently waited on ebay and finally won an AMD 2600+ MP 512/266, which I read somewhere nearby will over clock like a crazy thing (I liked that so I admittedly plagiarized it here). As I anxiously waited for its delivery and started to give up hope after 3 whole days of waiting. The mail deliverer passed me by every time, sometimes stopping briefly to hand me a bill or some stupid advertisement for an electric wheelchair or AARP sign up deal. Im only 53 I protest loudly. Why dont you bring me something I can use now, before I start looking forward to old people mail? as he triple timed his way around the corner, out of view. On the forth day I see a new mail deliverer in the distance. Did I scare the other one away. How did I get to be this tragic pathetic Shrek of a person who even his own mother wouldnt recognize anymore. I closed the door just knowing the world would end this day. Oh, why did I even bother to get up and change my razor blade this morning? Where is Dr. K when you need him? But, then I here a light rapping on the door. Could it be an insured package mail delivery? No, not likely. The mail deliverers in my neighborhood bang the doorknobs off to let you know they are in need your attention NOW! Squeeze it and get off the crapper NOW! But, not this gentle almost apologetic tapping which would come in groups of three (long pauses between the groups made me wonder if the person was deciding if they should try again). I open the door and in front of me stood possibly the shortest most petite mail woman I have ever seen. In n n n s s s s ured de de delivery fo fo for you u u s s s sir. I I I need you u ur sig g g nature. I didnt want to ask if she had an impediment, but I started feeling guilty, like this unfortunate person drew the short straw for her delivery route today. But then I realized I didnt care anymore. My prize has finally arrived. I quickly signed, took the package in the house and placed it by the computer. I didnt open it because I really did need to finish taking a crap. When I finished I hurriedly raced down the steps to where I placed the package. As I picked it up I noticed it seemed a tad light. Maybe it was just my frame of mind, my renewed sense of worth that made everything seem lighter. No, it felt very thin and bendable. I turned it over to find the USPS soft package, which the shipper paid 99 cents for (according to the print on the package) had ripped open and the contents nowhere to be seen. I traced my steps, even up the stairs to the john (for only god knows what reason). I couldnt think straight. Then I thought about the retched little twerp of a mail person and raced out the door. I caught up to her about a city block away, shaking in her cute little boots, petrified with fear, and start yelling and screaming like a crazy thing (ok, I promise I wont use that phrase again). Im so embarrassed as to what I did next I cant even tell you. But to this day I am still fighting with the post office to get my money back (three weeks). So, I am left with several questions and morals here. 1. Is ebay really worth it. To do battle for up to 10 days with the rest of the world for OPJ (Other Peoples Junk) to save maybe 25% if you win. 2. Is USPS still a bargain, when you have to pay them extra money to insure against them destroying or loosing your package. Kind of like hiring a fox to protect your henhouse is it not. I say Newegg it! (no I am not affiliated or have stock in them).
Thank you if you read the above paragraph it was therapeutic for me to write. Now, to the real reason for me being here.
I again went to ebay to purchase another AMD Mobile and this time came out the victor for a 2400+. Ive read that with the ECS K7S5A, installing this would not be properly recognized, however it would run it famously. And indeed, once I set the adjustable clocks to 133/133, (I have a cheapo 256 DDR 266) CPUID clocked me at 1792mhz, as expected. All programs were running fine and the temperature monitor program had me at 32c for case and 36c for processor with a Thermaltake fan/heat sync running at 7600rpms and no thermal paste (I expect to get blasted by everyone for that). Vcore is at around 1.5xxV.
I went to run Tomb Raider Chronicles, that was already installed and running fine prior to the processor change (other chip was an XP 1800+). The sound was fine but the video is missing all kinds of things. Walls, large portions of text, and Lara is recduced to a stick person (!f you are familiar with Laras usual physical attributes, this is very disheartening to see). The video card is a Nvidia geforce 4 mx440. Nothing is over clocked nor have I attempted to yet. I have the latest chipset AGP and Nvidia drivers installed and I have un/reinstalled the game. Running under a recent install (not a 98 upgrade) of XP Pro w/sp2.
Is there something I need to tweak for the mobile, or did I get a bum processor. Im hopping for a tweak obviously because I already gave the guy great feedback? He wont be motivated to take it back.
But seriously, thank you for reading. Any ideas would be appreciated.
