Now I have this annoying problem, When I turn on the system, I see and hear the cpu fan, hard drive, fans, run. Blank screen, no post test. I also see the cd-rom led blink as if it is trying to read, then go to an external zip drive and try to read, then the hard drive led, repeats . Just sits there, taunting me. Hit the re-set button. Nothing. Still runs , blank screen, no post. Hit the power button. Nothing. Still runs, blank screen, no post I then use the power switch on the back of the case to turn off. Wait thirty seconds, turn the switch on, hit the power button, boots right up. If I use Start/ ReStart or ctrl-alt-del, the system will restart and boot as normal. This occurs only if I use Start/Shut Down. Any suggestions? Thanks Norm

Any beeps when you power on? Try clearing CMOS Check also seating of AGP card and any PCI cards,IDE cables,ATX connector etc,clean battery holder,check BIOS chip hasn't "crept" in socket. Dave

I have exact the same very very strange phenomenon with my K7S5A, and i heard this problem from many other K7S5A User. I dont know what the reason is!? Maybe a damaged or dying Motherboard? I try out everything i can do to fix this problem. I only can fix it if i unplug the powercable of the PSU for a few minutes. Afterwards i connect the powercable with the PSU again, and i press the powerbutton, the system boot up correct and running fine! The same phenomenon also with different kind of PSUs, Memory, Cmos Batterys....... It seems this Motherboard sometimes have a power problem. The reason is unknown! Sorry, that i cant help you..... Bye

It appears that the new 120gig drive has not spun up to speed before the motherboard tries to check it, so it skips it and thus no operating system is found. Various lights flash as other drives are checked. If I then keep trying the reset button, eventually the drive is seen as it is now spinning correctly and the computer boots perfectly. Is this an issue others have found and is there any way to pause the motherboard a few seconds to allow the drive to spin up to speed? On another matter, the drive is correctly reported as 120gig on the boot up list, but windows ME sees it as 110gig. Is this an me software limitation?

As long as I wait 20 or so minutes after shutting it down before I turn it on again, everything is fine. Warm reboots also works every time. It leads me to believe it has something to do with some capacitors (in the power supply or on the board) that need to be discharged before it can boot up. If you have access to another power supply, you should try it out and see if it helps. kenfowler3966: There is an option in the bios allowing you to slow down the bootup procedure to let your hard drive spin up longer: Disable "Quick boot" in this bios page. About the drive size in Windows: It is no software limitation. It's because most harddrive manufacturers use "Marketing-gigabytes" when they specify drive capacity. When you buy a 120 "GB" harddrive, you only get around 110 real gigabytes. Per definition, one gigabyte equals 1,073,741,824 bytes. But most drive manufactures use the false formula of one gigabyte equals 1,000,000,000 bytes, so you get around 7% less storage capacity than advertised. It has been going on for years and years. The drive manufaturers should be wrapped in barbed wire and shot into the sun for that.

Posts: 34 (11/29/03 05:51:55) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Tried disabling quick boot but it makes no difference, my computer will now only start by pushing the reset buton, sometimes several times with a pause each time to see if the hard drive has been found. It does always seem to go eventually though. It used to work perfectly with the previous 40gig drive, but that now resides in my sons computer to replace a drive that failed so I can't go back to it.

And it's the same with Compact Flash memory... kenfowler3966: If your disk is a Western Digital, check the jumpers once more. WD's jumper system is different from everyone else. (Single master=no jumpers)

Posts: 34 (12/04/03 15:35:37) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	I have 2 hdd's, and have reconfigured to have the c: drive as a 30 gig 100ata, and the second is the 120 gig 100ata now split into 3 partititions. Both are western digital 7400rpm. With the 120 gig connected it wont start on the button but needs the reset pushed 2 or 3 times, with it out it starts first time! I have checked the jumpers and all are correct. It is definately not seeing a drive at first boot and hanging, but presumably the drive then comes on line for the second or third attempt.
