Reformatting a computercan be a daunting task, especially with a motherboard like
the K7S5A. Installing an OS, finding and installing drivers, service packs,
critical updates and other programs takes much time and effort and to make matters
worse, there are only a handful of guides to help take users through the whole
process. None of them are K7S5A-specific, either.
With this guide, you will be able to reformat and setup your K7S5A-based system
quickly and easily. It will help you to configure your system to run troublefree
right from the beginning. The guide will also show you how to install and configure
your software for maximum performance.
=NOTES=
-Throughout this guide at the bottom of each section, there will be notes that may
provide helpful information. Although not every note may apply to your system, it
is recommended that you read them to ensure the best usage of this guide.
-This guide is based on a Windows 2000 installion. It will later be updated
to accomodate Windows 98SE, Windows ME and Windows XP.
-Where applicable, links have been provided to downloads that may be essential to
the completion of this guide.
------------------------------------------------------------
PRE-FORMAT REQUIREMENTS
------------------------------------------------------------
Before you can begin with the formatting and reinstallation process, you must have
a number of items in hand. Following is a list of items this includes, but is not
limited to:
-Windows 2000 Installation Disc
-Floppy Diskette capable of booting the computer
-Manuals for your internet access hardware (e.g. cable modem installation & setup manual)
-A second hard drive or partitioned hard drive, or CD-R/CD-RW discs
Windows 2000 Installation Disc
------------------------------
You will need this disc to install the operating system. Please note that the
Windows 2000 Installation Disc that is referred to in this guide is the Windows
2000 OEM version ONLY. This does NOT cover any OS supplied by third parties who
may include extraneous software or features in their OSes (e.g. Dell).
Floppy Diskette capable of booting the computer
-----------------------------------------------
You may or may not need this during the guide, but just to be safe you should make
sure you have a start up diskette handy before starting this guide. Refer to the
unofficial K7S5A motherboard guide in the General forum on how to make a bootdisk
within Windows 2000.
Manuals for your internet access hardware
-----------------------------------------
If you are unsure how to set up your connection to the internet, it would be wise
to find the manuals that describe how to install/setup your hardware or software in
order to access the internet. If you are unable to setup your connection even with
the aid of the manual, you may want to ask a tech savvy friend or relative to do it
for you. Internet access is the most important thing to have while using this guide
and if you don't have it, DON'T GO ANY FURTHER UNTIL YOU KNOW EXACTLY HOW TO GET IT.
A second hard drive, partitioned hard drive, or CD-R/CD-RW media
------------------------------------------------------------
You will need these for backup. Personally, I find the easiest way to back up all
the files and programs I have is to partition my hard drive into two (or even three)
peices and store all the backup files on the smallest partion. You can decide
which method of backup you prefer, however.
=NOTES=
You will need the serial key for your Windows 2000 installation, so be sure
to have it handy before starting.
------------------------------------------------------------
BACKUP
------------------------------------------------------------
You may decide that you want to back up some things you have before beginning the
proceedure of reformatting and reinstalling your OS. This section will help you
identify certain things you may want to back up.
If you want to start from a completely fresh slate or you are installing an OS to
a newly purchased computer/hard drive, just skip to the next section
Following is a list of items recommended, but not limited to, be backed up:
-Passwords, login information, sensitive data
-Drivers, OS updates, patches
-Internet Browser favorites and bookmarks
-Save games
Passwords, login information, sensitive data
--------------------------------------------
This is the first thing you will want to back up, as it usually is the most important
information on your computer. You'll want to back up any information regarding
ISP login accounts and passwords, certain file or site access privaledges, login
information for internet forums or message boards and private/sensitive data held
on your computer.
Drivers, OS updates, patches
----------------------------
If you have a broadband connection, you may want to download all the drivers and
OS updates for your system before beginning the reformat process, so you will not
have to sit and wait for them to download after you have already begun. However, I
generally do not recommend you download critical updates for you system only because
Microsoft and other manufacturers are always updating their software and you can
generally always find the latest drivers, updates and patches on the internet. Make
sure you have a copy of the drivers you may need for internet access, though (cable
modem or analog modem drivers).
Internet Browser favorites and bookmarks
----------------------------------------
You may want to back up your bookmarks should you have more than you can remember.
The folder for favorites in Internet Explorer should be
C
Documents and Settings\User\Favorites
From there, just copy the entire contents of that folder and reinsert them back into
that same folder after you reinstall the OS. If you use a different browser, you
might check the help file of that browser to determine where the bookmarks/favorites
are kept.
Save Games
-------------
If you play games, you may want to backup your save games from single player sessions.
Usually the save game files are located in the same directory as the game themselves,
but sometimes they may be found in the "My Documents" folder and even other places.
Refer to the game's Read Me file or manual if you can't find your save games.
=NOTES=
-Make sure that the file system you save your backup files to is the same as the
file system you intend to install your OS on. For example, if you save your files
on a hard drive that is FAT32, make sure you also make the OS's file system FAT32 or
you files will become incompatible. A backup on CD-RW will allow you to transfer files
regardless of what the file system is (for example, if you backup FAT32 files to a CD-RW
disc, you can recopy them to a NTFS file system and they will still work).
-Before going to the next step, ensure that the first boot device is setup as CD-ROM
in the BIOS.
------------------------------------------------------------
FORMAT
------------------------------------------------------------
This section will discuss the format proceedure.
Insert the Windows 2000 Installation disc into your CD-ROM drive and restart your
computer. Follow the onscreen instructions until you get to a list of partitions
available for Windows 2000 installation.
To create a partition, press C. If you need to make partitions on your hard drive,
do this now. Make the size of the partition as you see fit.
To delete a partition, press D. Do this if you wish to wipe out the entire partition
and start from scratch. If you are changing file systems, it is recommended that
you do this.
After you have completed deleting/creating partitions, you will have to select which
file system to use. You can choose from FAT32 or NTFS. I would recommend NTFS as
it handles larger hard drives better and is more secure than FAT32. If you wish,
you can also convert your FAT32 system to NTFS, or leave it unchanged.
------------------------------------------------------------
OS INSTALLATION
------------------------------------------------------------
After the hard drive format is complete, follow the onscreen instructions to install
Windows 2000. Enter any requested information such as serial keys, location and time
You may also setup user accounts at this time, but to make it easier, it is recommended
that you just set up an Administrator account until you get Windows 2000 operational.
------------------------------------------------------------
POST OS INSTALLATION
------------------------------------------------------------
This is perhaps the most critical part of the guide. It covers installing hardware
drivers, OS updates and patches and other programs.
Following is a step-by-step guide to setting up your OS to full functionality:

Create connection to the internet
---------------------------------
When you start Windows 2000 for the first time, you'll be working in a 640x480
enviroment with only 16 colors. It may be hard to work in, but bear with it as you'll
only have to do it for a short time.
Begin by establishing an internet connection. This is why you needed to find your
internet service provider or hardware manual in the first section of this guide.
If you need to install any drivers for the hardware you have to access the internet,
install it now. When you are able to access the internet, move on to the next step.
Install Service Pack 4
----------------------
The next thing you will want to do is install Service Pack 4. SP4 incorporates so
many important fixes for Windows 2000 that it is recommended that you install it
before anything else. It will help avoid problems when installing other programs
and drivers later. Once SP4 is installed, move on to the next step.
You can download Service Pack 4 here:
www.microsoft.com/windows...efault.asp
Install SiS chipset drivers
---------------------------
SiS provides two chipset drivers for the K7S5A that should be downloaded. These are
the AGP driver and the IDE driver. The AGP driver enables Windows to recognize the
AGP bus and thus improves video performance. The IDE driver enables Windows to
recognize the SiS IDE controller used on the K7S5A and may improve hard drive and
CD/DVD performance (note that no reproducable tests have been done on the performance
of the SiS IDE driver versus the default Microsoft-supplied driver. Both drivers
are capable of UDMA transfers, so if you feel comfortable with the MS drivers, you
do not have to download the SiS drivers). Once you have installed these drivers,
move on to the next step.
You can download the SiS AGP driver here:
driver3.sis.com/agp/
You can download the SiS IDE driver here:
driver3.sis.com/utility/ide/
Install AMD's Windows 2000 AGP patch
------------------------------------
Certain applications which utilize the AGP bus may perform slow when used in combonation
with AMD AthlonXP, Athlon or Duron processors under Windows 2000. To fix this, AMD
released a patch for Windows 2000. Download this to ensure your K7S5A's AGP performance
does not suffer because of this bug. Once you have installed the patch, move on to
the next step.
You can download AMD's Windows 2000 AGP patch here:

Install any other hardware device driver
-----------------------------------------
Find drivers for any other peices of hardware your system may have. This may include,
but is not limited to modems, mice, TV tuners, webcams, monitors and other devices.
Install the drivers for these devices to ensure Windows is correctly identifying
the hardware. Once you have installed the drivers for these peices of hardware, move
on to the next step.
Install latest Internet Explorer
--------------------------------
Microsoft's Internet Explorer is an essential peice of software used in Windows. Even
if you do not use Internet Explorer for surfing the internet, you should update it
in order to recieve the best stability for your OS (IE has been known to make the
Windows kernel more stable after being updated). Once you install the latest IE, move
on to the next step.
You can download Internet Explorer here:
www.microsoft.com/downloa...laylang=en
Install critical updates, patches, ect
-----------------------------------
After IE is installed, you can begin download the latest updates for your OS. Software
such as Windows Media Player and other non-essential programs can also be updated. You
may also want to download Microsoft MDAC, which updates essential parts of the OS.
You can download Microsoft MDAC here:
